Please see the converstation pasted below between myself and Plantronic support. To summarize, I had a Voyager Legend that was not charging properly, replaced it and it is now charging in the manner I would expect it to. Support is stating that the first headset I had was not charging when turned on because charging while powered on would damage the battery, how can this be true if the replacement headset charges when it is turned on and I place it in the charging cradle?
Subject: Headset charging questions
Question / Description: When headset is powered on and paired to PC (BT300), it does not begin charging when connected to same PC or AC adapter via USB cable. Turning the headset off, then attaching it to USB cable initiates charging, then when turning headset on it continues to charge (as indicated by LED and battery status icon on PC). If I then take a call and place the headset back on the USB cable charger when finished, it does not begin charging.
The only way to get the headset into a charging state while on and paired with the PC is to turn headset off, connect to cable to intiate charging, and then turn on headset. Is this expected behavior?
Thank you for contacting Plantronics tech support.
The headset would have to be turned off when charging. Leaving the headset turned on when charging will damage the battery. This headset not charging when on, is expected with this model.
Can you please confirm this? I received a new headset and it does in fact charge as I would expect it to, however I want to make sure that charging it in this manner does not damage the battery as you have indicated.
I may not have been clear on what was meant by charging with the headset "on"; I did not mean to imply that the headset was on an active call while attempting to charge, simply powered on and paired (blue light solid on BT300 adapter).
The replacement headset I received begins charging when placed in the charging cradle as indicated by the flashing blue light and the charging icon in the Windows taskbar. If the headset is required to be powered off while in the cradle there is no indication of this in the user manual (if this causes damage to the battery it should certainly be indicated in the manual). Furthermore, if the headset is required to be powered off while in the charging cradle this would defeat the purpose of a PC headset because there would never be sufficient time to power it on and allow pairing to the BT300 when an incoming call is received.
The headset should be powered off when charging. Leaving it turned on when charging can damage the battery and shorten the battery life.
Hi Mark - It has been our policy in years past to advise against having the headset turned on while charging. This is still what we recommend - however, it is not integral to the health of the headset or the life of its battery. We simply recommend it as generally good practice, since actually using the headset while charging can negatively affect its performance.
